A while back, we told you about AVG’s new LiveKive service, a new cloud synchronization and backup tool which appears to have been named after a vat in which mash is made during the brewing process. But enough about AVG’s odd choice of monikers — LiveKive has launched and is now ready to accept your files into the AVG cloud.

LiveKive takes aim at services like Dropbox and SugarSync, though at the moment it’s lagging behind in terms of features. As it stands, LiveKive is only compatible with Windows and OS X. There are no mobile clients yet, though with AVG’s strong presence on Android we wouldn’t be surprised to see an app arrive in the near future.

The company is offering a heck of a deal right now, however. If you sign up for a paid account during the launch phase, you can score unlimited storage for $80 for a whole year. You can’t even score 50GB per year at that price from Dropbox, so if cost and space are more important to you than cross-platform availability, LiveKive might be worth checking out.

As several of you noted in the comments to our post asking for cross-platform iOS/Android games, Words With Friends for Android does not provide the smoothest gaming experience… and that’s being rather charitable.

You might be happy to hear that a couple of days ago Zynga released an update which promises to solve many of the Android-specific issues, such as notifications not popping up.

Sadly, installing the update is not a smooth experience; you have to manually uninstall the previous version, and then go to the Android Market and install it. What’s nice is that it doesn’t lose your saved games – this screenshot shows a game I’ve started before the update and continued after updating.

When you open Fooducate you can simply start scanning bar codes of items in order to see what their rating is as well as compare them with other alternatives. You can also type key words into search such as “bagels” to see a list view. From there you can choose from popular or recent items under that category. The quick view for an item will show you the overall grade, calories per serving, and the percentage of users who have liked that item.

Once you’re done creating a shopping list you can share it via e-mail, Facebook, or Twitter. The lists section will also show a complete history of viewed foods as well. You can clear out the history at any time with just a tap.

Another nice feature of Fooducate are the “Healthy Me” checks on the main menu where you can see how you stack up against what other users are eating. It aggregates products you are viewing for the week and all time as well as what products you’ve liked. It then gives you a letter grade based on what you’ve liked and shows you a side by side comparison of what others are liking.

If you’re the type of person who likes to read about nutrition and food facts, the daily tips section will give you just that. It links into Fooducate’s blog that is frequently updated with information on health, wellness, and how they are related to the foods we eat daily. Reading through some of the entries has made me second guess some of the foods I was eating on a pretty regular basis.

The good

• Finding and viewing information on foods couldn’t be a more painless process
• The replace feature in the shopping list is a great way to swap out not so great options with better ones in just a few taps
• Healthy Me checks are an easy way to see how you stack up against many other users
• More food items are updated and added regularly

The bad

• The UI could use some work as navigating through menus and back to the main browse foods section is a bit annoying
• Sometimes manually searching for key words yields unrelated results

If you want to be more consciously aware of the contents in the food you’re eating, Fooducate provides an amazing amount of information and user feedback that’ll help you do just that. While many nutrition apps aim to help you lose weight, Fooducate stresses the importance of also eating foods that are good for your body as a whole.

Google apparently is still planning on selling some sort of special Android-powered "head-up-display" type glasses, according to The New York Times' Bits blog. The latest unnamed sources say it'll come sometime this year, and cost roughly the same as a current smartphone, which the NYT pegs as between $250 and $600. Navigation and cellular data would be included.

So, let's recap: There's a 10-month window, and a $450 swing in price — never mind that a $250 smartphone is subsidized by a carrier. Gotcha. Thank you, drive through.

Gimmicky glasses have been around for some time — including Android-powered visual displays in the likes of the Epson Moverio. This sounds different, however, so I'm going to do something I rarely do when anonymous sources are involved — hold out hope that this could actually be pretty cool. But while folks are practically wetting themselves over the possibilty of some sci-fi Termintator type specs, consider the type of market a first-generation product like this might be targeting. Chances are it won't be the typical consumer.

And chances are it'll come in at the high end of that price range for the hardware. And that's not counting whatever the supposed cellular data will run.

With the LG Optimus Vu getting it's official unveiling ahead of Mobile World Congress, there is plenty of folks out there looking to get their hands on the device to get a better look at it. Luckily, the device has been making its rounds and most recently was caught on video.

In it, we get a good look at the 5-inch (1024×768) IPS display and a better feeling for the 4:3 aspect ratio plus, a look at the tools that will be used for hand written notes — just like the Galaxy Note, though there is no stylus present in the video. We'll hold off our full commentary until we get our own hands-on with it but what do you all think of it?

Ah, it was indeed only a matter of time. Much like the way HTC caved into fan pressure, ASUS has finally released a bootloader unlock tool for its Transformer Prime TF201. Understandably, the tablet will no longer be covered under warranty once you set it free, but the other catch is that it needs to be running Ice Cream Sandwich in the first place as well. Not that it concerned modder littlesteve who promptly ported a partially-working Ubuntu over to his unlocked slate, pictured above. Steve says there’s much work to be done yet, especially with enabling touchscreen support, so keep an eye on his tweets if you’re itching to get a taste of his Linux pie. Now, about that mysterious TF300T…

Over the last few days, a mass SQL injection attack has been quickly gathering speed. Just three days ago only 28,000 URLs were affected, but at the time of writing, there could be up to 3.8 million infected URLs.

Websense has a complete write up the attack, dubbed ‘LizaMoon,’ but here’s the basic gist: it looks like someone is exploiting a vulnerabilty (or vulnerabilities) in hundreds of thousands of websites running on Microsoft SQL Server 2003 and 2005. It’s not yet known whether this is a vulnerability in SQL Server, or simply a case of outdated, unmaintained, and easily-exploitable CMSes.

The attack takes the form of an SQL injection, which then inserts a link to a JavaScript file hosted on the attacker’s server. This is repeated over and over until every Web page in the SQL database has been infected — and considering 3.8 million URLs have been infected, you can see that this is a very easy, and automated, attack.

Fortunately, the JavaScript isn’t particularly malicious: it pops up a rogue AV program called Windows Stability Center, but that’s it. Better yet, the rogue antivirus is already recognized by a bunch of real antivirus suites, including Avast, Panda and Microsoft Security Essentials.

The real problem with SQL injection attacks is that there’s nothing we surfers can do about them. There will always be old and unmaintained websites, and thus SQL injections will remain one of the easiest and most lucrative tools of hackers and spammers alike. All you can do is keep your antivirus and anti-malware software up to date, and pray.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Plus Android tablet has a small bugfix update available. No real idea of what's new, other than "software and stability improvements," but the update takes half of forever to apply, which is a little surprising given that it's only a 19.38-megabyte download. We'll keep an ear out for any real deets on this one. Otherwise, head into the settings and get your update on.

The first time you launch the app you’ll be asked to sign into your Weight Watchers account. (You can choose for it to remember you in the Settings tab). Weight Watchers Barcode Scanner will load the scanner by default on launch. Then all you do is simply align a bar code and it scans away. It’ll read it and tell you the PointsPlus value for a single serving. If it can’t find an item, it’ll allow you to manually enter in carbs, fat, fiber, and protein into the points calculator.

Quickly scan an item to see the PointsPlus value in seconds. If the app can't find a value, it'll allow you to manually enter nutrition information.

If the app doesn’t know the serving size it will simply say unknown. I’ve found most of the time that it calculates a points value but says unknown serving size, it’s on items that are off-brand or measured in cups. You’ll just need to follow the serving size on the box. If you can’t get a good view of the bar code with the scanner, you can also choose to enter it in manually.

Quickly add scanned items directly to your favorites or tracker in a few quick taps. No need to jump into another application.

Weight Watchers Barcode Scanner will also keep track of all the foods you’ve scanned under the Lists tab. Not only can you view the items you’ve added, you can add them to your favorites or your tracker directly from the application. Since Weight Watchers stores all your information online, you’ll see the information added to your tracker via Weight Watchers Mobile as well next time you launch it.

There are a few apps in the app store that spit out Weight Watchers point values. I’ve found this one to be the best simply because it ties directly into your online tracker and integrates nicely as a companion app to the full Weight Watchers Mobile app. I don’t have to jump out of whatever I’m using to scan bar codes and into Weight Watchers mobile and re-enter information. I just add the item I want directly to my tracker from Barcode Scanner and it’s already there.

The good

• It makes grocery shopping for healthier foods less of a task and not so overwhelming
• Gives the option to add directly to your favorites and tracker which eliminates having to jump into another app
• The overall UI is very similar to the Weight Watchers Mobile app so you’ll feel right at home

The bad

• You’ll need a Weight Watchers subscription to utilize the application which may not be an option for some users as the cost may be more than they’re willing to pay
• You won’t always find bar codes for many off brands
• No auto-focus can be annoying at times when the app doesn’t automatically center in on the bar code

Conclusion

If you’re looking for an easier way to find PointsPlus values than typing in numbers each time, Weight Watchers Barcode Scanner is exactly what you’re looking for and a great companion app to Weight Watchers Mobile for iPhone. While there are competitors out there, they just can’t provide the tight integration into the Weight Watchers system that the official app can.

The fact that I can add things directly to my tracker and favorite items while I shop without jumping into multiple other apps makes it a hands down winner.

Well, that was quicker than I expected. Here we are, mostly through February — Mobile Nations Fitness Month — and what started as two weeks of solid daily walking as slipped back into 16-hour days at a desk.

Why am I not surprised.

I know I'm not alone there — we've all started some sort of exercise regimen only to let life, work, school — the old routine — sneak back in. And you know what? All the gadgets in the world can't keep it from happening. (Or, in my case, all the gadgets in the world are the direct cause.) That one's totally on me.

But, wait. No it's not. Frankly, I'm very disappointed in all of you. Two weeks away, and not one "What happened to Phil?!?!?!" thread in our our Health and Fitness forums. Fine. I get it. I'm on my own here. Thanks for nothing.

So we've got a week to go in Mobile Nations Fitness Month. And this ain't gonna be easy — I head to Mobile World Congress on Friday. Here's what we're going to do:

• I'm strapping the Fitbit back on. Let's see how far one walks at MWC, shall we? And perhaps there will be a contest around it.
• From now through Feb. 29 (it's a leap year, yo!), anyone who posts in the Health and Fitness forums is entered to win an Acer Iconia Tab A200. (Anyone who posts "I'm only posting to enter to win!" is lame and will not win.)
• If you see me sitting down somewhere, kick me in the rear and tell me to get my fat butt moving. Time's a wastin'.

While not a game per se, I found Mitoza intriguing enough to spend quite some time with it. You start off with a seed, and are then presented with two choices: you can either click a flower pot, or click a cute little birdie.

If you click the flower pot, a flower pot appears and the seed is planted inside. You’re then presented with two further choices — a water can or a bottle of fertilizer. Each choice you make causes your creation to morph, and presents you with two other choices.

There’s no winning or losing, really. Each “game” usually lasts around four or five choices, at which point the plant/animal dies in some creative (but not too gruesome) way. At this point you instantly start over with a new seed.

The graphics are captivating; the whole thing has a cinematic feel to it, with a bit of artificial camera shake added for style.

All in all, it’s a fun, peaceful way to spend a few minutes, and it might even make you think a little bit while you’re at it.

It sure has been a long time coming for our brothers over in the BlackBerry camp, but today is a day to remember. PlayBook OS 2.0 has finally been released, bringing with it access to Android applications through the Android Runtime. 

Many have been tinkering for some time now with the Developer Beta of 2.0 and porting apps to try out on the device. But as of today, any Android apps that were repackaged and submitted to BlackBerry App World will be available to everyone. 

We won't boast too hard about how great they're all going to be and that everyone will enjoy all of them — that wouldn't be fair, a lot of them will probably suck. But with the level of interest seen at the recent Devcon Europe, it might not work out too badly. 

There has been at least one big name Android developer who has ported over for launch though. Automattic who produce WordPress for Android have relaunched the same app as WordPress for Playbook. It also looks like the built in keyboard is BlackBerry's very own version of the Android third-party keyboard, Swiftkey. Pretty sweet. 

A little easter egg too for any of you out there that are running a BlackBerry smartphone and an Android Tablet. Our very own Chris Parsons has been doing some investigating, and it seems that with version 2.0 of the BlackBerry Bridge application it's not just PlayBooks that can be remote controlled. Because it utilises the Bluetooth HID standard, Bridge can be used with all sorts of devices like a PS3, and even Chris' Motorola Xoom. Hit the link below to check out that video. 

It just leaves us to say — welcome to the family, sort of. It's been a long road to OS 2.0 that's for sure. It has emerged that the underlying cause of RSA’s SecurID gaffe was the recently-reported zero-day vulnerability found in Adobe’s Flash Player.

The exploit, which used specially-crafted Flash embedding in Excel spreadsheets, was first reported on March 15 and has since been fixed. RSA was hacked sometime in the first half of March when an employee was successfully spear phished and opened an infected spreadsheet. As soon as the spreadsheet was opened, an advanced persistent threat (APT) — a backdoor Trojan — called Poison Ivy was installed. From there, the attackers basically had free reign of RSA’s internal network, which led to the eventual dissemination of data pertaining to RSA’s two-factor authenticators.

The attack is reminiscent of the APTs used in the China vs. Google attacks from last year — and indeed, Uri Rivner, the head of new technologies at RSA is quick to point out that that other big companies are being attacked, too: “The number of enterprises hit by APTs grows by the month; and the range of APT targets includes just about every industry. Unofficial tallies number dozens of mega corporations attacked [...] These companies deploy any imaginable combination of state-of-the-art perimeter and end-point security controls, and use all imaginable combinations of security operations and security controls. Yet still the determined attackers find their way in.”

What we’d like to know, though, is whether the attack on RSA was caused by Adobe’s lackadaisical approach to patching Flash — or was it the other way around? Was it the RSA attack that first brought the zero-day vulnerability to Adobe’s attention?
